FALSE! One tomato is not selling at GHc 10 today [June 4th 2025]

On June 4th, 2025, Dennis Miracles Aboagye,  former Director of communications for presidential candidate, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia (former vice president of Ghana) was on Channel One TV’s Breakfast show where he claimed that one tomato is selling for GHS 10. He was speaking on the recent Energy Sector Bill passed by the parliament of Ghana.

These were his specific comments:

“Today, tomatoes that was selling for two for 5 cedis is selling for one for 10 cedis, that is the burden they have reduced” [Video HERE 1:36-1:45].

He also repeated the same claims on Asempa FM’s EKOSIISEN show  [video HERE].

Factcenta has verified the claim and presents the facts below.

Claim: Today one piece of tomato is selling for 10 cedis

Verdict: False

Explanation

To verify the current price of tomatoes in the market, an analyst from Factcenta visited two markets, Texpo and Makola. Texpo market (located on Spintex road) prices are usually higher than prices at Makola. At the Texpo market, our analyst confirmed that GHS 10 can get you either four, five or six  tomatoes depending on the size of the tomato and  which vendor you visit as well as your bargaining power. At the Makola market, GHS 10 could get you anything between seven to 10 of tomatoes.

One vendor had this to say:

when we were buying a box (adaka) of tomatoes at GHc8000 last year (2024), we sold 2 tomatoes for GHc5. Now the price per a box (adaka) is GHc3000, we are selling 6 tomatoes for GHc10

It is important to note that the price of tomatoes changes from season to season [see this report]. For example, during the rainy season, Ghanaian tomato farmers face many challenges, like flooding, that significantly impact their yields, sales and profits.
