On August 26, 2025, a viral post was sighted on social media which claimed that the Ghana Education Service had reinstated Michael Owusu Afriyie, popularly known as Teacher Kwadwo. An account on X and Facebook first shared the post.
Fact Centa has verified the claims of the viral post and presents the results below:
Claim: GES reinstates Teacher Kwadwo
Verdict: False
Explanation
In determining the authenticity of the news widely shared, we simply relied on two sources. Firstly, we searched for any credible reports on the issue on the website and social pages of regular national media outlets in Ghana. Secondly, we confirmed from official sources at the Ghana Education Service, including their website and official social media pages.
Results from the first source found no credible media reports to validate the claim in the viral post. Secondly, we found that the Ghana Education Service has, through its official Facebook page, debunked the news as FALSE.
In their post, they said that ‘if Mr. Owusu Afriyie believes that his dismissal, which happened in 2021, is contestable, he is encouraged to submit a formal petition in writing for due consideration’.
Background
Teacher Kwadwo was dismissed in 2021 over allegations of misconduct and failure to prepare lesson plans as a professional teacher. He is also said to have disregarded a directive from his District Director to prepare lesson plans. He was also accused of absenting himself from school for 55 days in the academic year without formal permission.
Teacher Kwadwo was a primary 4 teacher in Akrofuom D/A primary school in the Ashanti Region.
